Used as early as the 1700’s, staddle stones were used to lift buildings off the ground to deter rodents from entering. The unusual shape make it difficult for vermin climb.
These staddle stones were imported from Europe and retain the lichen and moss from their native home. As shown at this time they aren’t as full of the natural beauty of soft moss patches as when they arrived but we are slowly bringing them back to their original glory.
